One big hat is more than enough

The NSW Government is seeking to end the practice of a Member of Parliament serving both as Mayor or Councillor and as a Member of the NSW Parliament, bringing to an end ‘two hatting’. The Local Government Minister is finding a way to stop mayors also acting as MPs before the September 2012 council elections.  A third of all Member of Parliaments work deals with complaints about councils. Most of the Mayors now also serving in the NSW Parliament have announced they will not continue to hold the two positions, i.e. Mayor and member of The NSW Parliament. Mayors in other states, including Queensland, are banned from drawing two public pay packets.
