The NSW Labor Opposition today announced it will not support the O’Farrell Government’s Planning Bill in its current form.

Shadow Minister for Planning Luke Foley said Labor believes in a planning regime that properly balances economic activity, environmental protections and community participation and the bill in its current form does not strike this balance.

Mr Foley said the bill requires heavy amendment and the Labor Opposition invites the Government to enter into constructive discussions to this end.

“Labor will be constructive in seeking to deliver New South Wales a fair and balanced planning regime,” said Mr Foley.

“We only get one chance each generation to redesign the Planning Act and we must get it right. Planning laws change our communities and the environment forever.

“Mr O’Farrell and Mr Hazzard falsely made the claim prior to the 2011 election that they would return planning powers to local communities. No wonder so many people feel betrayed now, as the Government’s bill does no such thing.

“This current bill diminishes current community rights and erodes existing environmental protections.

“We invite the O’Farrell Government to work with us in the next few weeks to get the balance right. Labor cannot support this Planning Bill.
